pearl jam // leash

seit ein paar wochen höre ich die alten platten von pearl jam rauf und runter - darunter leash, was schon seit immer eines meiner absoluten lieblingssongs war. rückblickend waren die neunziger jahre nicht soo schlecht, wie ich immer gedacht habe. sie waren auch nicht ganz so langweilig wie die nuller jahre (vor allen aus musikalischer sicht; mit ausnahme von eurodance – das fand ich damals schon extrem langweilig).

ella fitzgerald & miguel migs - slap the bass (petalpusher remix)

if you’re into jazz and electronic music, then you should check out the verve remixed album series. verve’s a famous jazz label and in honor of their artists, the label asked djs to remix their classic jazz songs. the results are more than impressive! “slap the bass” was written by george gershwin and it’s part of ella fitzgerald’s george gershwin songbook, which is considered a milestone in the history of jazz music. i love both versions and i like the idea that the remixed songs could help to bring jazz music closer to younger people.

among the oak & ash // big mouth stikes again

among the oak & ash are an american folk duo, which consists of josh joplin and garrison starr. they recorded for their album classic american folk songs from the appalachian region. though the songs are old, among the oak and ash gives them a beautiful fresh note. big mouth strikes again is an exception – it’s a cover from the smiths and a pretty good one. also because garrisson starr has a much better voice than the squeaky annoying smith-backgroundsinger.

apparat // fractales part I & II

berlin based apparat aka sascha ring is an amazing artist with a seemingly endless range of creativity. fractales part I & II with its complex and interwoven sounds, sounds like sunny weather, birds twittering, chilling in the park and dawn. but only during spring/summer. kinda weird.

massive attack // unfinished sympathy

blue lines is in my opinion massive attack’s best record. every song on this album’s great, which is really rare. i also like protection and mezzanine - but every record after these is boring as hell imho. i love unfinished sympathy, because it’s mesmerizing and timeless – a real classic! i adore the video and its oldschool, amateurish look (it’s from 1991).

sukhwinder singh, sapna awasthi featuring panjabi mc // chaiyya chaiyya

when i saw the first minutes of inside man, i heard this song and i was deeply impressed – wooah, i just *had* to hear that song in full length! anyway, i must confess, i really like “bollywood” sounds, but do understand, when someone isn’t into this kind of music. ;)

btw – if you liked the movie, there’s good news: a sequel will be released later this year.

grizzly bear // two weeks

while listening to certain songs i just have to grin the whole time and could embrace the whole world. two weeks by grizzly bear is such a song. it’s great and sweet as cotton candy and lifts you up, up, up.. :)

ella fitzgerald // scat “one note samba”

ella fitzgerald was not only a marvellous jazz singer, but also a fantastic scat singer (as you can hear in the video). this is what jazz is about: improvisation. and ella was an excellent improviser. rumor has it, she started scatting, because she forgot the words…but it really doesn’t matter. it’s just beautiful.

guru’s jazzmatazz // state of clarity

“state of clarity” is the living proof, that jazz and hip-hop are complementing one another. guru founded the band project jazzmatazz in 1993 and released four records so far. i really like the whole concept of the fusion between jazz and hip-hop. and i love the video of “state of clarity”, because fritz the cat plays in it - he’s a pretty cool cat!

skalpel // 1958

skalpel are a polish jazz/electro band and they’re pretty crazy. but i like their music, though it’s sometimes a bit too dark. 1958 is a nice song for days like today…

editors // papillon

“papillon” isn’t brandnew, the single was released last fall. anyway, the song reminds heavily of the 80s. and depeche mode. i’m neither a fan of depeche mode or 80s music. but fuck it - i think the song’s awesome! i love the beat and the voice fits it perfectly. and the video is kinda cool. guys running around without sweating (sic!??).

nirvana // jesus doesn’t want me for a sunbeam

nirvana will always have a special place in my heart. ugh! sounds pretty kitschy - but nevermind. i grew up with their music and i just love them very much. i know, you know that already - most of their songs are melancholic and somewhat depressing. BUT there’s this fantastic unplugged concert with this cute little song “jesus doesn’t want me for a sunbeam”. it’s a cover from the band the vaselines. and woah - this song always makes me smile. and i like how it sounds like an old sailor song.

the chemical brothers & q-tip // galvanize

when “galvanize” first came out as a single a couple of years ago, i absolutely loathed it. but a couple of weeks ago i re-listened to “push the button” (a great record, btw!) and “galvanize”. now, i really like it! the maroccian sound and q-tip’s voice are just great. i like the roughness of the song. also it would’ve been a perfect film song for movies like ghost dog or la haine.

archive // fuck u

archive are a marvellous london based band - go listen to their debut record “londinium” (it’s a trip hop classic). “fuck u” is a great song, anyway helene hegemann (the author of “axolotl roadkill”) copied the lyrics of “fuck u” and used them in her book. she translated the lyrics into german (you can read it on the last page - it’s supposed to be a letter from mother to daughter). it’s unbelivable. she should give archive credit, where credit is due. but that’s another story…

_boards of canada // music is math

if there is something like a typical spring song, then it’s “music is math” by boards of canada. it’s a pretty slow song, but the drifty bass line makes the song spinning fast. also it’s spring-like, because some cracking noise layers of the song sounds like chirps. or so. anyway it’s a great song - one of my favourites. and it’s a perfect song while running or working out - makes you smile the whole time.

_bonobo // pick up

there’s no spring without fine tunes by bonobo. “pick up” is a fucking great song. it smells like warm sun rays and laughter. very simplistic. very sophisticated. but so damn smooth. plus the chords are amazing.

2009 war kein schlechtes jahr und die nuller jahre keine schlechte dekade. die zeit geht so wahnsinnig schnell vorüber. wo ist sie nur geblieben? scary. manchmal denke ich, es hat sich nichts geändert und manchmal denke ich das genaue gegenteil. wenn ich zehn jahre zurückblicke, dann kann ich zumindest feststellen, dass ich mich sehr verändert habe. würde mich jetzt gerne mit meinem ich vor zehn jahren mal unterhalten. wäre sicher interessant. aber auch irgendwie blöd, denn vergangenheit ist ja nun mal vergangen. und kann nicht mehr verändert werden. im gegensatz zu der zukunft. die ist spannender, weil man nicht weiß, was kommen wird.

die 2000er jahre lassen sich so grob umschreiben:

diplom
mehrere erlebnisse, die mich bis heute nachhaltig (zum positiven) geprägt haben.

klingt langweilig, aber ist vielleicht gerade deshalb cool.

die nuller jahre sind auch interessant, weil sie so scheinbar uninteressant waren. aus kulturellen gesichtspunkten war dieses jahrzehnt jedenfalls extrem spannend. ich kann keinen lieblingsfilm, buch oder album nennen. ich habe zu viel gesehen, zu viel gelesen und zu viel gehört, um mir das alles merken zu können, was toll und was schlecht war. aber manches hat mich so sehr umgehauen, dass es sich für immer ins gedächtnis eingebrannt hat.

_film:

_requiem for a dream. dieser film ist so verdammt deprimierend. deshalb kann man sich ihn auch nur einmal im jahrzehnt ansehen. ich weiß noch, wie ich völlig verstört aus dem kino getaumelt bin. der plot über den absturz von drogenabhängigen ist schon schlimm genug. aber der score von clint mansell tut sein übriges. er tut weh. und zwar richtig. er passt sich perfekt den kaum zu ertragenden bildern an. je näher der absturz, desto unerträglicher die musik. desto unterträglicher die bilder. darsteller, musik und kamera bilden eine schaurig-schöne einheit, die ich so bisher noch nie gesehen habe. deshalb ist requiem for a dream für mich der eindringlichste film in den 2000er jahren.

_infinite jest

eigentlich hat das buch hier nix zu suchen, denn es wurde bereits 1996 veröffentlicht. aber damals war mein englisch zu schlecht, um das buch auch nur ansatzweise zu verstehen. aber ich wünschte, ich hätte das infinite jest schon viel früher gelesen. denn: das buch ist gigantisch. in jeglicher hinsicht. über 1000 seiten dick. komplexe sprache. 100 seiten appendix. kurz gesagt, infinite jest ist eine herausforderung. ich habe über 2 jahre gebraucht, um es zu lesen. zwischendurch hatte ich keine lust mehr. war am verzweifeln. letztes jahr habe ich es zu ende gelesen. worum zum teufel geht es in dem buch? welche drogen hat david foster wallace nur beim schreiben eingeschmissen? aber verdammt - es lohnt sich! gesellschaftliche scheinheiligkeiten werden ebenso behandelt, wie konformismus, oberflächlichkeit, drogen, konsum, medien-verdummung, post-moderne oder philosophie. infinite jest ist eine chaotisch, verschwurbelte, verschrobene und völlig durchgeknallte dystopie und ich liebe es!

_electro-shock blues

es gab in diesem jahrzehnt bessere alben. electro-shock-blues von den eels erschien auch eigentlich nicht in den 2000er jahren, sondern 1998. esist aber trotzdem für mich das beste album in diesem jahrzehnt. im krankenhaus habe ich es rauf und runter gehört. es hat mir sehr geholfen. dafür liebe ich dieses album abgöttisch. auch wegen diesen lyrics:

– was auch wieder ein schönes motto für die kommenden jahre ist.

beautiful, just beautiful. i <3 this song so much! :)

beth ditto ist zur zeit omnipräsent. das liegt zum einen, dass ihre band the gossip ein neues album veröffentlicht hat und zum einen an ihrer imposanten erscheinung. ich finde es toll, dass beth ditto auf alles scheißt, was nach gesellschaftlichen regeln ein absolutes no-go ist. extrem fett! rasiert sich nicht unter den achselhaaren! zieht enge minikleider an, in denen sie wie eine presswurst aussieht! und ist zudem auch noch lesbisch und mit einem transgender mann zusammen! oh my god! in zeiten, wo models immer dünner werden, frauen keine kurven haben dürfen, flat chest en vogue ist, sind frauen wie ditto eine wohltat.

dabei geht es nicht um ästhetik, sondern um die tatsache, dass sie sich nichts vorschreiben lässt, das macht wozu sie lust hat, und sich nicht um gesellschaftliche in stein gemeißelte normen kümmert. das ist toll, weil es heutzutage eine seltenheit ist. heute will jeder aussehen wie paris hilton oder jede x-beliebige b-schauspielerin. charakter ist egal, es laufen nur klone herum, die sich nach mode- und glamourzeitschriften richten und dementsprechen ununterscheidbar geworden sind. daher braucht die welt noch mehr frauen wie beth ditto. die übrigens kein mauerblümchendasein fristet, sondern in jeder modenschau in der ersten reihe sitzt, mit kate moss befreundet und die neue muse von karl lagerfeld ist.
